Everyone has a way of walking. In this life there is the walk of the Christian or the Righteous but, there is also the walk of the wicked or the worldly.
Let’s begin by looking at Psalm 1:1
Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
First begin by highlighting in GREEN the phrase “Blessed is the man”.
We first notice that the man who follows the warnings about to be given will be blessed. Walk, stand and sit in this verse are references to the Christian everyday life (walk) and with who the Christian shares a friendship (stands & sit).
Next highlight in YELLOW the phrase “the counsel of the ungodly”. We are cautioned not walk in the counsel or advice of the ungodly or wicked. Also note the following cross-references; Proverbs 4:14-19, Psalm 119:105-106).
Next, highlight in YELLOW the phrase “the path of sinners”. This “path” is reference to those to whom we maintain friendships. We may have many acquaintances and know many people. However we must choose those whom we call our friends carefully. As their “walk” could pull us down the pathway of sin.
Also note the following cross-references; 1 Corinthians 15:33, Proverbs 12:26.
Next, highlight in YELLOW the phrase “seat of the scornful”. These mock and scorn the way of righteousness and often mock the idea of a Creator completely. We are cautioned not to sit in the seats of such people. Also note the following cross-references; Proverbs 14:9, Psalm 26:4-5.
In Psalm 1:2 the text switches to the positive.
But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.
Highlight in GREEN the phrase “delight is in the law of the Lord”.
We see the Christian will be blessed when their delight in the law of the Lord. We should delight in it as within its pages are the words of eternal life. Also note the following cross-references; Psalm 19:7-11, James 1:25
Next Highlight in GREEN the phrase “in His Law he meditates”. The Christian will meditate, think on, and focus on God’s Word on a regular basis. Doing this will only cause spiritual growth and a closer walk with God. Also note the following cross-references; Proverbs 23:7, Psalm 119:97-99.
In Psalm 1:3 the righteous, the blessed man is compared to a tree.
He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.
The Christian will see in verse three that he (the Christian) will be planted, have a firm foundation, and be secure when we choose to delight & mediate in God’s law.
Highlight in BLUE the phrase “shall be like a tree”. Also note the following cross-references; Psalm 92:12-15, Jeremiah 17:7-8.
Next we see that the faithful Christian will be fruitful, evergreen and prosperous. Highlight in BLUE the phrases “its fruit in its season”, “shall not wither” and “shall prosper”. Also note the following cross-reference, Joshua 1:7-8.
